Only in America
Arriving in LA from NZ – my first foray into ‘only in America’ happens when I get onto the transfer bus from the airport to the hotel. A passenger in only what could be described as white sports socks and open toe roman sandals gets a BIC shaver out of his rucksack and starts shaving his already bald head. No shaving foam or soap required here! We all look bemused on the bus and wonder why? Perhaps he’s off on a very important date!!
Fashion is non-existent in all that I have seen so far in Los Angeles, whether wandering the streets or visiting the vast malls. Other than men seeming to think that it’s a good idea to wear stripped socks with anything from dress pants to shorts – there isn’t much to write home about. However, the sales are exceptional and the service cannot be faltered. ‘Your server’ welcomes you at every store. I manage to purchase some tee shirts, lounge pants and togs plus a suitcase (all on sale). Oh and a little bit of suntan.
For me I have never thought that American fashion was that great – even when visiting New York I still found it hard to find clothes that suited my body shape and style. I guess you just have to know the right places to go, that have what you are looking for. Saying that, I did find some fantastic gems while in New York which I still love today. I guess that is the testament of good fashion – something that lasts a life-time and always retains its ‘style aesthetic’. To me that is what defines ‘What is Style?’.
My suitcase already feels heavy and I haven’t even made it to London – my next port-of-call.
Let’s see what happens there. Talk to you soon…
You are such a jetter setter! Why LA? and what are lounge pants? I assume they are comfy pants for at home use? where did you buy your LA gear? Your admiring fabs want to know! what do you recommend wearing on a long flight? Have a great trip.
I haven’t spent much time in LA so thought would see what it had to offer from a shopping perspective. It tended to have either the expensive Rodeo Drive labels or the cheaper mall style stores – I couldn’t find anything inbetween. The sales are fantastic and you can definitely pick up some bargins. I was on the lookout for some casual (lounge pants) that were tracksuit type that I could wear around the house but still had some sense of style. Victoria Secret and Macy’s were great for sale items. Unfortunately didn’t have alot of time but may check out more on my way home. Thanks for taking the time to read my blog …
