NZ Fashion At Its Best
There is nothing better than window shopping on a nice Sunday afternoon. Hence how I ended up wandering into The Shelter Retail Precinct in Ponsonby, which is where I found a design label called Lela Jacobs (a New Zealand based fashion designer) who I hadn’t come across before. I was initially drawn to the interesting and oddly captivating gold hand necklace which was hanging like two small boxing gloves delicately poised for battle over a black recycled organic silk dress.
The clothes all looked to be from a natural pallet of materials that had an organic and raw feel, that somehow bought them to life. I liked what I saw, and felt this was a collection that had an intellectual and sophisticated buyer in mind. She also looks to use local NZ manufacturers and hand-knitters, and appreciates the importance of our home-grown industry. Something I truly admire.
With an open studio and concept store located on K’Road, aptly called “The Keep” you may just want to ‘keep’ an eye out for this designer.
You seem to be a very busy lady,Yellow Tulip! How do manage to fit all this ‘discovering’ fashion in, with working full time?
I will defintely check out this label, looks great!
Thanks for your lovely comment and always good to find some hidden talent that I didn’t know was out there …
I love that she is using local resources. Her collection seems to have a lot of black – its not a common color here in Seattle, at least not in Bellevue. NZ women certainly have an affinity for it – my wardrobe is still full of that color.
The dark colours she uses are very much the general colour palette that us New Zealanders love and my wardrobe has plenty of black in there for sure with a smattering of other colours. I always get drawn to black as such an easy colour to wear. Am sure there will be room for a Lela Jacobs piece …
