Personality, Not Age Defines Me

I went to a Seminar last week, where the guest of honour was Fashion Designer Karen Walker.  It was a frank and open discussion, where she talked about her life within the Fashion Arena, including her recent showing at New York Fashion Week as well as her work with the United Nations’ International Trade Centre’s Ethical Fashion Initiative. This UN lead project has been set up to provide opportunity for sustainable work rather than charity work being offered in such under-developed counties as Africa & Haiti.

I didn’t know a lot about Karen Walker the brand so was keen to find out more about her international success.  I find her designs generally have a tailoring and style that has a strong, structured, slightly masculine look that caters to a wide audience.  It is a pity her general style aesthetic however doesn’t really suit my body shape, but you can’t have everything!  She also has a strong accessories range, particularly her eyewear collection which has been a phenomenal success, since it launched back in 2005.  Recent ad campaigns’ have helped raised the stakes even higher.

One of the comments she made has stayed with me and I have been mulling it over in my mind ever since.  She believes we should always be “dressing for our personality not our age”. Glossy magazines tend to be full of pictures depicting dressing styles to wear in your 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and 60’s etc.  Why?  I haven’t seen any clothing for sale that comes with a swing tag (with an age bracket attached).  Have you?

Hopefully for all of us our charming personalities will continue to shine through and our age will forever be nothing but a number.

I fell into the art of style quite by accident. There was no defining moment when I decided that I knew what I wanted to do. I want people to feel good about themselves. Many don’t know where to shop and/or how to wear fashion. It has never been solely about cost, but of finding quality at a reasonable price and being able to wear - to suit your own figure, style and fashion. Join me as we explore – What is Style? 1. I agree with dressing for personality rather than being pigeon holed entirely by age (think middle aged and older woman in the past with their blue rinses and polyester dresses!). However, getting stuck in a personality led style rut is not a good thing – there are those that found their look at a certain time and have never deviated (I once knew someone who embraced a certain hairstyle from the 80’s which was fabulous at the time, but 15 years later was so not!). I also think that we should take from fashion what actually suits us, not just wear something solely because it is fashionable or because someone else you know wears it!

    • Well said my friend. As we do get slightly older we tend to have a better feel for what suits and what we like to wear, which isn’t influenced by other’s opinions. I have always liked wearing what I like, rather than anything considered fashionable. Lucky we all have such great personalities. xx

  2. Great post, and we totally agree … you are as old or as young as you feel, and there is no such thing as dressing for your age because we all have a style that is our own. Well said.

    XOXO N & N

  3. One thing I love about fashion is the ability to have a sense of style that is all your own. Age is irrelevant and I am happy to say, will never influence what I choose to wear. Have a lovely day. xx

  4. beautiful and inspiring post!!
    xoxo

  5. I am in no hurry to throw out my bikini at 46 – it is a different generation. Mum stopped wearing hers at 25!

  6. If you are still in great shape at any age, why not wear what you want??
    Completely different generation now….
