Why do Women Love to Shop?
I wish that I didn’t like shopping but I do. I have a couple of friends (funnily enough Accountants) who tend to shop out of necessity, rather than pleasure and often I wish I was more like them. Are some of us born with a shopping gene?
I’m not sure where mine came from (I checked with both my birth mother and Mum) – who have no idea how or why I can easily wander around a shopping mall for hours (not necessarily buying anything) just for pleasure. I tend to have the stamina of an ox, and am generally the last man (oops woman) standing. I can enter and exit a store in quick succession. I scan the clothes, do a quality check, briefly look at the styles and am out faster than a speeding bullet, not wanting to waste time if nothing appeals.
Shopping with others is a different matter. I like visiting stores I normally wouldn’t go into, if shopping with a friend. Thank goodness we all have such different taste, as I wouldn’t want to end up fighting over the same outfit. Of course sometimes the only thing holding us back is the fact that our wardrobe is already full, and there just isn’t any more room for another pair of shoes!
I wonder how many friendships have been ruined through buying or wearing the same clothes. I for one, definitely don’t like to be copied. As none of my friends wear the colour yellow, and we generally all have different body shapes, I think I’ll be alright for a few more years. A man that knows a little bit more about fashion than I do, has the following words of wisdom :
“Buy what you don’t have yet, or what you really want, which can be mixed with what you already own. Buy only because something excites you, not just for the simple act of shopping.” Karl Lagerfeld
I know for me that I get triggered to shop by my emotions and can end up spending compulsively. I found a 12 step money group that helps with that, by encouraging me to have a clear vision, which makes it easier to say no to purchases that don’t align with it. Also to wait 72 hours before buying anything. I’m on a minimalist kick at present. I’ve swapped all my jewelry for a pair of diamond studs and a diamond pendant – both of which were a present from someone I love. It feels good to wear them everyday and diamonds go with everything!
Your diamonds are devine, Erin!
It always come back to having quality items that will last a life-time. I think it is wise advice to always take time before deciding whether to buy it or not. Thank goodness for Trade Me as it is good to be able to find a new home for those purchases that perhaps shouldn’t have happened. Love your diamonds – they are beautiful.
I definitely don’t have the shopping gene, although my mother does. One of her greatest pleasures seems to be to window shop her way around a mall, while I’d rather remove my own limbs with my teeth than go with her! I only tend to shop when I absolutely have to and even do my Christmas shopping in October to avoid the holiday crowds! I don’t mind going shopping with a friend occasionally though if I do need something, it tends to make me look outside of my comfort zone and try on something that I would not otherwise have considered on my own! I agree with you about not wanting to be seen in the same thing as someone else, even when it’s accidental! At work sometimes, everyone seemed to turn up in the same colours, so we used to just joke that we’d all got the memo about the blue top or whatever!!
I am surprised that so many like the idea of on-line shopping, as I have never had a lot of luck with on-line, hence why I like to be able to wander at my leisure. Mum definitely likes shopping, and even more so being close to the Albany Shopping Centre. Your mum sounds just like mine, I do prefer strip shopping to shopping malls though. Don’t get me started on anyone wearing the same outfit … a definite no no. Funny that sometimes you were all at work wearing the same colour … Enjoy your weekend if you do go shopping (ha ha).
I couldn’t agree more with your comments. I sure fall into the category of not loving shopping!
Funnily enough you have an accounting brain like my other friends …. I need to like numbers more!
I believe everyone has an addiction and mine is shopping. The good thing as you said, non of my friends has the same taste on cloth and I some of them aren´t shopaholics, so as you, we don´t fight over cloth.
Hey Monica – always good to have a variety of friends who have different style and taste in clothes. Who doesn’t like shopping … Would be keen to know where you like to shop?
Fashion shopping would be a lot of fun with you, Yellow Tulip!
Would love to take you shopping anytime … although all the lovely clothes you bought in America will last you ages ….
