Going for Gold
The colour gold this year has taken on a whole new meaning for anyone interested in the Olympic Games starting in London on the 27th of July 2012. The fact that Stella McCarthy and Adidas have joined forces and designed the official uniform for the British Team, Ralph Lauren for the USA, and Giorgio Armani is doing the Italian team proud got me thinking – have we always had a fascination with fashion designers decking out our professional athletics, or is this a relatively new idea. Some countries obviously don’t seem too bothered either way, with the Australian team leading the charge and getting the first Gold medal in my opinion for what not to wear for the opening ceremony, unless of course you enjoy looking like a lawn bowler.
Saying that, looking through the NZ archives of how we have been dressed for the Olympics over the years, 1972 would have to have been my favourite ‘fashion moment’ from days gone by. This year’s official uniform is to be released on the 28th June 2012 but I can tell you it is being designed by Rodd & Gunn with our athletics wearing sportswear designed by Peak – a winning combination sure to get us on that podium stage.
Wishing the NZ team the best of luck. You have a nation of supporters behind you all the way. Make us Proud.
That video was hilarious. I had not heard of Peak, so appreciate the link. I read that Barkers sponsor the All Blacks?
The video was a fantaastic reminder of days gone by. Thats great news the All Blacks being sponsored by such a well known brand as Barkers. Looking forward to seeing them in their new menswear. Thanks for letting me know.
