Fashion Speed Dating – Survival of the Fittest

3 Minute Fashion Speed Dating

3 Minute Fashion Speed Dating

Friday night Fashion Speed Dating : chance to meet 10 industry leaders in NZ Fashion, from editors to designers and stylists.

It should have been called “Fashion Speed Dating Survival of the Fittest and those with the best Hearing”.  For starters it was pretty hard to actually talk to the ‘industry insider’ (let alone listen to what they had to say) as the lovely lady organising us all, talked so loudly into the microphone that you just couldn’t really hear what anyone was saying.  We had 3 minutes with each person, so timing was crucial.  Sometimes it was very clearly shouted to us, how long we had left – but most just ignored it and kept talking until they got pushed out of their seat.  At one stage you had to run from one end to the other (probably a distance of about 20 metres) to talk to the next person, so lucky I do the odd half marathon and was quite prepared to run fast.

Very few ‘industry insiders’ had business cards on them (deliberate or just didn’t want to hand them out – I’m not sure).  I did get 2 cards and was grateful to get those. Most commented that they didn’t really follow any blogs and generally agreed it was a hard industry to develop a following and/or make any money from, as the market in New Zealand is pretty small.  To be taken seriously there was a strong focus on finding your own voice and style, to write well and be passionate about what you do.

I handed out my business card to all those I interviewed and look forward to seeing if anyone contacts me.  My personal highlights were talking to Norrie Montgomery (The A List) – Photographer (check out and Dan Ahwa (Canvas Fashion Editor & Stylist for the New Zealand Herald).  Both were really engaging and interesting in their feedback and insights on what I could and should be doing.

The Fashion Speed Dating was part of the NZ Fashion Festival (check out for a range of shows, seminars and events happening in Auckland for the next week.  I have my fingers crossed that the other events get better!!  Will let you know how I get on.

Oh and by the way – thanks for all your support in helping me on my quest to becoming a well-known and influential blogger.  I do appreciate all the feedback and comments and would love any suggestions or ideas you may have.  Till next time….

I fell into the art of style quite by accident. There was no defining moment when I decided that I knew what I wanted to do. I want people to feel good about themselves. Many don’t know where to shop and/or how to wear fashion. It has never been solely about cost, but of finding quality at a reasonable price and being able to wear - to suit your own figure, style and fashion. Join me as we explore – What is Style?
