  • "I fell into the art of style quite by accident. There was no defining moment when I decided that I knew what I wanted to do. I want people to feel good about themselves.

Many don’t know where to shop and/or how to wear fashion. It has never been solely about cost, but of finding quality at a reasonable price and being able to wear - to suit your own figure, style and fashion."

I LOVE SHOES

An Image Speaks a Thousand Words

February 19, 2013 · stylebyyellowtulip

I went to an exhibition at the Auckland Art Gallery over the weekend entitled “Who Shot Rock & Roll”. As I have always been into music and more recently photography – I was intrigued to see the creative talents merged between the photographer and musician(s). The images displayed captured striking moments in time, showcasing behind the scenes, portraits and rare glimpses of history seen through the eyes of a lens where music is the backbone.

I was drawn to a photo from the 1970’s of the Supremes exiting a plane, smiling, looking so poised and polished you would have thought they had just stepped off a fashion shoot. On reading about the photo you find that it was indeed staged for the camera, as they wanted the Supremes to look as glamorous as possible, in order to try to boost ticket sales. I so wish I looked like that after a long-haul flight!!  I really wanted to take some photos, but you weren’t allowed.

Elvis Presley, Grace Jones, The Rolling Stones aka Mick Jagger and Keith Richards had a strong photographic presence. There was also a moving image of Kurt Cobain absolutely exhausted and emotionally drained, backstage at one of his concerts. He looked to have nothing ‘left in the tank’ and it was indeed a raw and emotional, yet disturbing image at the same time.

Many of the photos displayed were in black and white. Colour didn’t have a big part to play (regardless of what year the images were taken). Paring something back to its basic shell and not being swayed by the influence of colour makes a photo ‘come to life’ – you see the photo in its untamed original beauty I believe.

In the fashion world, well-known photographers Steven Meisel, Mario Testino and Patrick Demarchelier have made an international name for themselves in the celebrated world of fashion photography. With their unique ability to capture an image that tells a story – they produce a visual feast of beauty time after time.  Their pictures grace many magazine covers, of which American Vogue is no exception – showing us What is Style.

I personally admire Karl Lagerfeld for his creative genus both behind the camera and as a designer. He tests the artistic boundaries many times over with his ability to merge art and fashion so succinctly.  Here are a couple of images that I took, plus a card by Karl.

American Vogue November 2012 “Hot Spots”

I don’t like the latest trend of literally wearing what can only be described as ‘glorified pajamas’ i.e. twin-sets out in public.  The VIVA section of the NZ Herald this week reiterated the popular look of the moment as has the November issue of American Vogue.

Perhaps my aversion to this look manifested itself in my outfit yesterday, which consisted of black and white skinnies in an Aztec print with a grey and white cotton dotted tee-shirt (with way too many dots to count).  So what do you think of my ensemble?  Skinnies available from Topshop Sydney or on line (AUS$77.00) and tee-shirt from Cotton on Body ($9.95).

How Many is too Many?

Net-A-Porter Apps looks great

I have just counted how many fashion apps I have downloaded on my iPad, and have decided I have way too many.  Have I used any of them on a regular basis, No.  But I guess, that isn’t the point. It is knowing I can have all the information I want, on any of my favourite topics, at my fingertips.

So what am I doing recommending some fashion apps to you?  Well, I thought you might be interested if by chance you haven’t downloaded any yet.  Marie Claire (Australian Magazine of the Year – April 2012 issue) talked about a couple of fashion apps which may appeal.  Stylebook (is a wardrobe organiser – so all you need to do is upload pictures of your clothes and accessories and the app will do the rest);  Shopstyle (is on-line shopping from a broad range of retailers);  and Chicfeed (is on-trend photos from top fashion blogs).  If you have any personal favourites, or recommendations – please let me know.

My favourites at the moment are Net-A-Porter  and Vogue Stylist - both visually appealing and can keep me occupied for hours.

So, how many ‘apps’ does a girl or guy need?

What was the stylist thinking?

January 19, 2012 · stylebyyellowtulip

The 2012 Golden Globe Awards always tend to bring out the best and worst in dress sense, when it comes to celebrities. I can’t understand why those that can afford many luxuries in life, can still get it so wrong when dressing for these occasions.

It tends to always be easier to pick on those that look bad rather than those that look good.  For me there was nothing that stood out as being original, classic and stylish this year.  I didn’t mind the Claire Danes gown by J. Mendel with the cut-away back.  The combination of black and ivory is a classic.  The gown I liked but I thought the make-up and hair didn’t suit the elegance and simplicity of the dress.

My favourite colour made a bold appearance this year,  shown off splendidly by Paula Patton in a Monique Lhuillier gown.    She looked elegant, with a natural style and grace.  I want that dress!  The less said about Sarah Michelle Gellar in her Monique Lhuillier gown the better.  I have to agree that tie-dye has never looked good on anyone.  Trust me!   If you want to see more, check out Golden Globes Fashion 2012 for what looked good and what didn’t.

Coming up next month is London Fashion Week 2012 (17th-22nd February).  I am sure there will be plenty of beautiful and amazing shows and garments that will tempt us all, and possibly the odd one or two that may leave us not so sure, and perhaps wanting more.  However, that is what I love about fashion – it is very subjective and what one likes, another will hate.  It is all about personal preference.  For me I love Zambesi clothes and Chanel handbags.  A girl can never have too many handbags I say.

The Contrast Sleeve Dress in White

I Want Karen Walker’s Summer Range

I am always keen to support, where I can, local fashion designers.   Karen Walker is arguably one of the most influential designers from New Zealand that has been able to create an international presence in the fashion arena.   She showcases at New York Fashion Week each year, and has showrooms in Sydney, Tokyo, New York and London.

Although the aesthetic that she designs for, doesn’t really suit my body shape, I have a couple of tops that I have bought over the years that I still wear and do wish that she designed more clothes that suited my shape.

Yesterday I ventured into her store in Newmarket, Auckland and tried on a Tennis Dress (if only it would stop raining then I could actually play tennis) and a couple of variations of the Contrast Sleeve Dress.  They were playful dresses that made me feel young (is this a good thing) and that fitted in a casual way that didn’t show all the wrong bits.  Priced at around NZ $285 for the Tennis Dress and NZ $180 for the Contrast Dress – I was tempted.

I loved the fabric and the interpretations of the K and W inter-linked through-out the ‘motifs’ on the front of the Contrast Dress.  The sleeves were a nice shear fabric.  It definitely had appeal when I ventured out of the changing rooms, which were full of customers trying on an array of designs, from lovely 50’s style knee length dresses – perfect for a summer’s evening or wedding; to tops of the same fabric, which looked delicate – with a touch of sophistication and a few other variations of the dresses that I was trying on.  There is a lot to like about the range on offer at Karen Walker and I haven’t even mentioned about the Karen Walker jewellery or her designer sunglasses.   Go check it out.
